Christopher Stanley shares their experience of balancing family life, personal interests and career and feeling welcomed and included

Christopher (he/she/they) joined Ramboll in 2019, working as a senior aviation technician in a role that is interesting and varied. They are also involved in a number of employee networks. Find out more about her experiences of working at Ramboll:

On coming home when they joined Ramboll…

From the moment I joined, it felt like coming home, like a family. Everybody's incredibly nice. People are interested in who you are and what you enjoy. We get together, go bowling, go running together, there are all sorts of activities that people get involved in, and we usually get a good turnout, which is great for getting to know each other better.

Ramboll has been there and supported me in a way I didn’t expect and gave me the space I needed during some difficult times. You shouldn't judge a company by the way they treat you in the good times, you should judge a company by the way they treat you in the bad times, when you're struggling, when the company is struggling.

On inclusivity and other ways to make a difference…

Our people networks are a great way of including everyone. I'm co-chair of the LGBTQ+ network and I volunteer for the Racial Equality network as well, but there are also networks for Ability, Gender Balance, Wellbeing, STEM, Sustainable Living, and Making a Difference. Ramboll supports you in engaging in those networks – and not in your own time – you get time in work to take part.

The networks arrange incredible webinars and events that actually help people and help them be themselves. When I hosted an internal webinar about being non-binary, management attended and emailed me afterwards, I felt very supported. The Making a Difference network is one I want to get involved in, making a difference in the community, something that’s important to me.

On their colleagues and connections…

My colleagues are really friendly, and I’ve made a lot of connections across many of our offices. Everyone's willing to teach and learn new stuff. When people get to know you, get to know your strengths, they will call on you, and ask if there's a better way of doing something. We have incredibly talented employees in Ramboll. There’s a lot of innovation. Some of the tools that we use, especially on some of the large infrastructure projects, are great, saving time.

On how he uses flexible and hybrid working…

I have a lot of flexibility. I’m able to work from home and choose my hours so long as I get the work done and you are backed by senior leadership in that. While I have agreed a 60/40 split between home and the office, some weeks I might be in the office five days and others one day or none, depending on workload and what I need to do. It just makes it so much easier – no rushing around – and benefits my home life. For example, I like to grow my own food, so I can go to the allotment before I start work, and I enjoy the football, so if I’ve got a football match in the evening, it’s so much easier to work from home that day.

There are other ways flexible working has helped me, I have been able to attend meetings that support my wellbeing, attend medical appointments, and also support my daughter by being there when she gets in from school, and that’s really helped our relationship.
