Emily Scoones explains how Ramboll’s approach to innovation and the support of colleagues has influenced her career in unexpected ways

Emily joined Ramboll in 2016 as a graduate engineer and having progressed through a number of roles, now heads Digital Innovation within our Buildings market. Find out more about her experiences at Ramboll:

On non-traditional career paths…

Ramboll has been great at recognising the value of career paths that are different from the traditional routes and creating opportunities to support this. I have had many different opportunities while at Ramboll which have allowed me to grow. I’ve been able to work on a mix of traditional engineering projects alongside digital development, either on or off project. These have had a huge impact on my career to date, helping me develop into the role I currently have, which is not something I imagined I would be doing when I first started my career. There have also been other training opportunities (e.g. for chartership) and programmes, such as the Innovation Accelerator, which is a kind of tech-start up bootcamp process. The opportunities I have had at Ramboll have nurtured my skills and given me new ones that allow me to challenge myself.

On innovation and challenging the status quo…

Ramboll invests in technical excellence and creates a safe space for innovation to occur. It allows us to work in new ways, leverage technology, and drive better decision making, which can impact a project, our clients or most importantly, the people who will use what we build. On a personal level, the challenge comes from learning new skills, changing your mindset and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. And it is challenging, as is doing anything differently, but it is very rewarding.
One of my favourite aspects of challenging the status quo is working with great teams and people. Collaborating on problems, getting a range of diverse insights and learning from each other is very fun, makes the challenges easier to face and gives you a team to celebrate the success with.

On being inspired by her Ramboll colleagues…

The people at Ramboll are fantastic. Just seeing the great work that everyone is doing inspires me. They play a huge role in my professional development and personal wellbeing. Some by the ideas and skills they have, some by the difference they are trying to make and some by their strength and determination to pave new and exciting career paths. In my experience, colleagues at Ramboll are happy to share their knowledge or collaborate to help you grow and support you both technically and on a personal level. This has been pivotal for me to get where I am. That support has come from all levels – from leadership, the team I work with and particularly the line managers who have protected my time, understood my passion and found me wonderful opportunities.
