The strategy has typically been applied to exhibition halls, sport halls, conventions centers (Louisa Jordan, USACE Novi, Stockholm Fair, Ifema), as well as basements and parking garages (SMC Israel). With the help of prefabricated modular systems, which are easy to assemble and disassemble, a substantial increase in the number of ICU beds could be achieved in a brief amount of time.

The six cases presented in this study include an escalation strategy and have been based on the early projections of the number of ICU beds needed.
