Developing sustainable data centres

As demand for data continues to grow, the industry faces a crucial question: how can we reduce environmental impact without compromising performance?

Ramboll’s first-of-its-kind paper addresses each aspect of these concerns directly, providing a holistic, detailed, and multi-pronged approach to reducing the climate impact of data centers

Critical aspects to achieving sustainable data centres

1. Renewable Energy

Energy is at the core of sustainable data centre development. At Ramboll, we leverage integrated renewable energy systems such as solar, wind, green hydrogen, and bioenergy solutions—to power next-generation data centres with reduced emissions. Our approach integrates energy generation with advanced waste heat recovery and integration, and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) to drive holistic decarbonisation and energy optimization.

From feasibility and concept design to implementation and compliance, we help clients transition from traditional grids to a low-carbon energy system. Our multidisciplinary technical experts deliver tailored, end-to-end solutions that align with your business goals, ESG commitments, and growth strategy—enabling sustainable, optimised, future-ready operations

2. Water

Water is a critical utility in sustainable data centre development. At Ramboll, we apply a systems-thinking approach to manage water across the entire project life cycle — from master planning and water infrastructure due dilliance to design and construction to resilient operations and compliance support.

Our multidisciplinary expertise enables tailored solutions that align with your business goals and ESG commitments. Every project is a partnership: we offer dedicated service teams, deep sector experience, and access to our full technical capabilities to deliver resilient, efficient, and future-ready data centres.

3. Sustainable Design

Ramboll delivers advanced MEP design solutions for data centers across APAC, supporting hyperscale, colocation, modular, and edge deployments. Our engineers focus on high-efficiency, resilient systems tailored to regional climate conditions, utility availability, and client uptime requirements. From power distribution and cooling strategies to fire protection and controls integration.

In parallel, our civil and structural engineering teams provide the foundational infrastructure essential for data center success. Together with MEP and architectural disciplines, our integrated approach enables seamless, scalable design from concept to construction overview.

Following the acquisition of i3 Solutions Group, we’ve enhanced our capabilities in mission-critical systems engineering, allowing us to deliver comprehensive, future-ready data center designs that support AI workloads, sustainability goals, and evolving operational needs.

Capability statement

Based on our decades of understanding of regulatory requirements across geographies, we assist clients in strategic decision making throughout a data centres lifecycle.

Our agile, client focused approach is tailored to each project's needs to assure functionality, flexibility, and efficiency. Whether needing to deliver operational or energy efficiencies, or simply respond to regulatory changes, we can help your new or existing build.
