Ruth Bush on flexible working, Ramboll’s culture and professional opportunities

Ruth has been working at Ramboll since 2020 as a principal consultant focused on low carbon policy and planning within our Energy team. Find out what she thinks about working at Ramboll

On Ramboll’s culture and flexible working…

Ramboll has a wonderfully collaborative culture. Something that I noticed straight away when I first joined. I think that's because it's quite a values-based organisation. Everyone here is working towards something that they believe in. For us in Energy, that's about net zero and how we get there in the best way possible, so people are keen to work together, to share ideas and expertise.

It’s also an inclusive workplace with a very flexible working culture, and that's been really, really important to me over the last few years. I've got a 3-year-old, I'm expecting another little one in the next few months and I've really valued the flexibility that has enabled me to flex my hours so I can take my son to swimming on Friday afternoons or be there when I’m needed. It makes the world of difference to me, to be the mother I want to be, but also to take on the work and the challenge of work and still progress within the organisation.

On what it’s like to work here…

One of Ramboll's key values is enjoyment at the workplace and for me, that has been really apparent during my time here. I think it comes from working in a place where people really do care about the topics that they are working on, but also the relaxed and supportive culture that is developed around us. It means we can have a good time while we are working on things that we're passionate about, which makes it a great environment to work in.

It’s not just about getting into work, getting the work done and going home. There's a lot more to life than that.

On opportunities and how her career has developed at Ramboll…

Despite being in a very busy stage of life, career progression is also really important for me and Ramboll has given me the opportunity to have that. When I joined, I was entering a new sector, one that I've not worked in before. I came in at a senior level, but have been able to build up my experience through working with different clients, different projects, and different types of work.

I have also been promoted and stepped up into more levels of responsibility, taking on a bigger team and continuing to grow it over the last year.

There’s international opportunity here at Ramboll too, which has been really exciting. I’ve enjoyed being able to work on an international scale; we've done things like connect with Municipalities in Denmark, in Germany, in the United States and connect them with people in the UK.

I feel like I'm always moving forward and growing and developing my own skills and experience, and I fully intend to keep that going as I continue in this busy phase of my life.
