Walking and cycling data study

Data on walking and cycling is important for cities in order to set goals and targets, create the policies needed to reach these goals, to track progress, make decisions and prioritize about investments in infrastructure and planning measures that support walking and cycling.

But unlike vehicle, data on pedestrians and cyclists is often not systematically collected, has limitations and can be difficult to compare and benchmark.

The challenge & the potential

Cities around the World are facing the same challenge - decades of car-centric planning has resulted in congestion, air pollution, CO2 emissions, noise, and poor quality of space.

Cycling is a green, clean, and healthy mode of transport, that also contributes to less congestion as cycling is a very space efficient way of moving people in a city. Cycling benefits both the individual, our cities, and the World at large.

In Ramboll we help cities harvest the benefits of cycling by planning and designing for cycling. Normalizing cycling means making it an attractive and safe means of transportation - not only for the dedicated few, but for all, independent of age, gender, or fitness.

Our cycling planning and designing roots are in Denmark and Copenhagen, but our team also draws on experience from The Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Germany. In short - we combine international best practice experience with local knowledge.

Niko Palo
Planning Manager

Niko is a planning manager at Ramboll. He is leading Ramboll’s service line of cycling. He is an international expert on planning infrastructure of bicycle traffic. He specialises in traffic and street planning, network planning, way-finding and writing planning manuals.

Harpreet Kaur Bajaj
Principal Transport Economist

Harpreet Bajaj has varied experience in development of macro-economic and traffic demand forecasts for transport facilities, project appraisals including revenue assessment and cost-benefit analysis. Harpreet has been part of the service line focused on sustainable mobility solutions with active mobility forming an integral part. She is keen to promote cycling in India as active mobility option with focus on gender issues.  

Hampus Ekblad
Traffic planner

Hampus is a traffic planner, engineer and avid cyclist in Sweden. He has worked with cycling on many different levels as a researcher, public official and planner. Main areas of focus is infrastructure design and he also has broad knowledge of traffic safety for vulnerable road users.

Jacob Deichmann 
Chief consultant, urban designer

Over a career spanning more than 25 years, Jacob has been involved in cycling projects in all scales, ranging from network planning over development of road standards and bike parking projects to concept and detail designs of bicycle infrastructure projects such as the iconic Bicycle Snake in Copenhagen.

Thaddaeus O'Higgins
Associate

Thad is a client focused transport planning professional with over 20 years of experience. Focusing on cycling, Thad specializes in ensuring cycling and active travel generally are put first in any masterplan or scheme development proposals he is working on, by articulating the substantial benefits of active travel (e.g. carbon, energy, health and community) against the often minimal infrastructure costs and operational change required to enable active travel.

Lovisa Strandlund

Lovisa is an experienced transport planner with 18 years in the field, specializing in sustainable mobility and urban cycling solutions. She has worked on cycling projects across all stages, from strategic planning to detailed infrastructure design, contributing to practical and well-integrated solutions making cities more accessible and bike-friendly.

 

Marte Dahl

Marte is a traffic planner, engineer, and cycling enthusiast based in Norway. She works with planning for bicycling, walking and BREEAM as well as and transport modelling. Her daily tasks include developing mobility plans and providing design input. She has also led an internal initiative to increase walking and cycling at her local office, and brings this commitment into her project work.

 

Jens Blume 
Team Lead, Cycling and Transport Planning

Jens is a transport engineer and cycling specialist at Ramboll in Germany. He has extensive experience in the planning and design of cycling infrastructure, ranging from local bicycle networks and urban street redesigns to high-capacity cycle routes and regional connections. His expertise covers feasibility studies, concept and detailed design, junction planning, traffic safety and the integration of cycling with public transport and urban development. As a project manager and team lead, Jens combines technical knowledge with a strong focus on practical, safe and user-oriented solutions.
