Visualization of roles strategy: Fribourg, Switzerland

Canton Hospital

The cantonal hospital of Fribourg implemented a care model based on a standard calendar, organisation-wide hygiene standards, rounding following identify, situation, background, assessment and recommendation (ISBAR) and standardised patient communication [1].

Moreover, they introduced a stand-up huddle—a short multidisciplinary meeting (5–7 minutes) in front of a huddle board so that simple visuals can be used to spread information quickly and effectively and individuals can react to uncertain or novel situations. The huddle, which can be conducted once or several times a day, has several functions. It increases transparency, so all involved know what is important today and where they stand in relation to the goals.

Moreover, it makes deviations quickly visible for the team as well as provides the chance to identify solutions to these problems in a timely manner. Through the huddle, all employees have a shared understanding of relevant factors that may influence their work. Teams who maintained their huddle routine throughout the pandemic reported that this routine made it easier for them to navigate the abundance of new information that was dispatched by authorities and management [1].
