Support to New European Bauhaus Local Initiatives

Winners of the Call
The first call of the New European Bauhaus dedicated to local initiatives has been a success with more than 80 applications submitted by local and middle-sized municipalities across the EU.
After in-depth evaluation and final decision of our Selection Committee, 20 projects presenting a great potential to exemplify New European Bauhaus values have been selected.

1. Christo and Jeanne-Claude Center – Towards a new art center in Gabrovo, the hometown of artist Christo
Bulgaria - Gabrovo Municipality
For 30 years a wide community has been working for the establishment of a new art center in Gabrovo, the hometown of artist Christo. The project aims to address local and global social challenges through artistic license, cross-disciplinary sustainable and future-oriented solutions.
2. Revitalization of the “TUP” Carbon Graphite and Electrical Contact Products Factory
Croatia - City of Dubrovnik
The project proposal aims at transforming the factory into a place that promotes local creative ideas, coexistence of the local community and tourists, and implements the concept of self-sustainability using a transdisciplinary approach.
3. Step by step to sustainable inclusion - upgrade of the Roma settlement to be fully infrastructurally equipped, resilient sustainable
Croatia - City of Kutina
The idea of this project is the renovation and upgrade of the Roma settlement in the City of Kutina, whose ultimate goal is a fully infrastructurally equipped and functional, resilient and above all sustainable part of the city with a well-integrated, satisfied and happy community.
4. LEDSROAR - Ledras and Onasagorou: Regeneration of pedestrian streets and restoration of Building facades
Cyprus - Nicosia Municipality
Ledras and Onasagorou are the main pedestrian commercial streets in the walled historic centre of Nicosia. They have fallen into decadence, more so following the economic crisis and the pandemic. The project aims at bringing life back to the area in an aesthetically pleasing, inclusive and sustainable way.
5. Vridsløse (a former prison complex) – a new sustainable neighbourhood in the heart of Albertslund, taking the past into the future.
Denmark - The municipality of Albertslund
The project aims at transforming Vridsløse – a former prison complex in the heart of Albertslund - into a new liveable and green neighbourhood, where the future residents of the area as well as the rest of Albertslund feel a sense of belonging.
6. The Urban Powerhouse - turning an abandoned power plant into a sustainable platform for human encounters, art and culture, municipal services, retail and affordable housing
Finland - City of Riihimäki
The project will develop an old, abandoned power plant into a sustainable platform for human encounters, art and culture, municipal services, retail and affordable housing. The idea is to conceptualize and renovate the building by valuing cultural heritage, aesthetics, circularity and urban porosity.
7. Innovation Campus Project - 3.5 ha site for creation, training, entrepreneurship and organization of cultural and social events
France - Communauté de Communes du Bassin de Pompey
The Innovation Campus project consists of the renovation and extension of the Herzog site (3.5 ha), into a to a space of innovation for creation, training, entrepreneurship and organization of cultural and social events, through a collaborative process bringing together different stakeholders.
8. Rural Patterns - re-designing the urban space of the city’s center through extended water-permeable paving systems, natural materials, natural elements
Greece - Municipality of Katerini
The project proposal rests on re-designing the urban space of the city’s center through extended water-permeable paving systems, natural materials, natural elements such as trees, and customized objects that integrate natural sources such as rainwater and sunlight, shaping a new sustainable identity.
9. ’KRYPTON HOUSE’ – a first class innovative creative-industrial, multicultural, smart and sustainable centre of experience from the First Krypton Factory situated in brownfield area
Hungary - Local Government of City of Ajka
The Integrated Development Program of Ajka City creating a first class innovative creative-industrial, multicultural, smart and sustainable centre of experience from the First Krypton Factory situated in brownfield area, involving the cooperation of productive local communities and generations.
10. "Furniture and Lacework Widespread Museum” FULAWIM
Italy - COMUNE DI CANTÙ - Municipality of Cantù
Furniture and lacework widespread museum with headquarters between Villa Calvi and former Sant'Ambrogio Church, aimed at enhancing and preserving the productive and cultural traditions of the territory, upgrading of the architectural heritage and enhancing tourist-cultural-commercial attractiveness.
11. Creative and digital industries quarter RAINIS - a meeting and working place for the creative community in the heart of the city with its own ecosystem
Latvia - Cēsis Municipality
RAINIS is a meeting and working place for the creative community in the heart of the city with its own ecosystem, where people of all ages meet to set the direction for a better and greener future through the prism of art, culture and action.
12. Positioning of the military heritage at the soviet army missile base in Zeltini to a tourism, entrepreneurship and nature research infrastructure
Latvia - Alūksne municipality
The aim of the project is to create a high-quality and safe tourism, entrepreneurship and nature research infrastructure and a complex management solution in the territory of the Soviet army Missile base in Zeltiņi, Alūksne municipality.
13. Faial Island Arts Bank - transformative island, community, cultural, digital and arts-based, participatory hub, renovating a very beautiful public heritage building
Portugal - Câmara Municipal da Horta - Horta's City hall
The project will create a transformative island, community, cultural, digital and arts-based, participatory hub, renovating a very beautiful public heritage building, in a spirit of circularity, connecting sea, island’s culture and its human diversity, creating a “glocal” islander regeneration wave or “swell”.
14. Network of Villages for the Future
Portugal - Municipality of Pampilhosa da Serra
The project idea is to define and implement a new policy mix for the Villages of the cross-border EUROACE Euroregion, structure catchment areas based on complementary network services and foster new rural-urban relationships.
15. Minda - reconversion of a former industrial site into a place for the community and for creative industries
Romania - Resita Municipality
Resita's dynamic urban regeneration envisions for 2030 a green and vibrant city, by treasuring the 250 years of metal industry inheritance. This is clearly illustrated by 'Minda' experience - redesigning a former industrial site into a living place for the community and a space for creatives.
16. Cultural and educational center in an old, unaesthetic and ruined building built during the communist's period
Romania - UAT Tarlungeni
The project will transform one old, unaesthetic and ruined building built during the communist's period into a cultural and educational center.
17. From Ironworks to FutureWorks! Transforming Old Ironworks Museum Area in Ravne na Koroškem into a Meeting Point of Industrial Heritage and Creativity
Slovenia - Municipality of Ravne na Koroškem (Občina Ravne na Koroškem)
The project aims to support the transformation of the Old Ironworks Museum Area in the Slovenian town of Ravne na Koroškem into a contemporary urban centre for inhabitants and visitors by using the town's industrial cultural heritage as the key element of its cultural and economic transformation.
18. L’Olivera DigitALL: a digital and sustainable education facility for all
Spain - Ajuntament de Sant Boi de Llobregat
The transformation of an existing building into an innovative education public facility. It will have new room arrangements and services that facilitate the digital transition, leaving no one behind. It is intended to become a green, neutral-emissions building with a spirit of full circularity.
19. GAIACELLS: bioconstruction for integration temporary housing
Spain - Municipality of Nijar
The eradication of shanty towns in agricultural areas through the bioconstruction of temporary accommodation using the Superadobe technique. GAIACELLS is proposed as a dignified, effective, aesthetic, participatory and sustainable solution to the serious problem of social inclusion.
20. SURE-Kalmar - Sustainable Urban Regeneration and Engagement in a 100-hectare centrally located industrial zone
Sweden - Kalmar municipality
This project will be the first step to transform a 100-hectare centrally located industrial zone in Kalmar into a resilient, sustainable and inclusive urban design/spa. The project team, with close cooperation of local communities, will turn the industrial zone into living space reflecting the core values of the New European Bauhaus.
Our goal
The New European Bauhaus makes the European Green Deal a cultural, human-centred, positive and tangible experience for everyone, promoting the transformation and adaptation of our cities all around Europe through beautiful, sustainable and inclusive places.
Through this competitive call, we’ll incubate inspiring place-based transformative projects, that foster the three complementary values of the New European Bauhaus in daily lives, living spaces and experiences::
- Sustainability – foster climate goals, circularity, zero pollution, and biodiversity
- Aesthetics – increase the quality of experience and style beyond functionality
- Inclusion – promote valuing diversity, accessibility and affordability
Specifically, the selected projects led by local public authorities and contributing to the New European Bauhaus belong to four action areas:
- Renovation of existing buildings and public spaces in a spirit of circularity and carbon neutrality;
- Preservation and transformation of cultural heritage;
- Adaptation and transformation of buildings for affordable housing solutions;
- Regeneration of urban or rural spaces.
This call is funded by the EU through the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy and implemented in collaboration with Ramboll Management Consulting.

20 place-based projects are selected to receive
up to 75 days of in-kind support by interdisciplinary experts
via a Technical Assistance Programme.
The support
The programme includes:
- Needs assessment: Experts perform an assessment of the specific needs of the envisaged New European Bauhaus project and develop technical assistance plans with tailored support.
- Support services: Experts provide state-of-the-art project development and planning, stakeholder engagement (e.g., stakeholder mapping, citizen engagement) and technical advice according to the needs identified.
- Implementation roadmap: Experts support the beneficiaries in the incubation of the project towards a detailed roadmap that will guide and enable the implementation of their idea.
Specifically, the expertise that the winner projects can count on includes:
- A variety of methodologies and toolboxes to combine nature, culture, inclusion and art in the design of liveable places and buildings;
- Experienced project coordinators and high-level experts on sustainable liveable places and on stakeholder engagement (e.g., digitally enabled and data-driven anthropological methods);
- Development of project proposals based on best-in-class place-based, participatory, planning and project development practices.
