How to achieve sustainability goals – The art of the possible within the framework of today

13:00-14:00pm (CET)

We must act to support climate action and nature loss - but what is the role of healthcare estates and construction in this?

Our speakers will present views from their experience:
  • Chris will share how a 1970s hospital has become the first hospital in the UK to use renewable energy exclusively - including solar panels above their carpark.
  • Martha will address a sustainable-by-design driven material agenda, focusing on the importance of minimizing the health consequences of construction materials, not just in the user phase, but throughout the entire value chain.
  • Brita and Mona will explore how working in a close client-consultant relationship can help set ambitious goals and achieve profitability. They will discuss strategies for integrating environmental sustainability and maintaining execution capability in long-term projects.

Transforming existing hospitals – pathways to adaptable, sustainable and efficient healthcare

14:30-15:30pm (CET)

Explore reuse of old buildings versus new construction, sustainable and regenerative design principles, and the challenges of refurbishment.

Most current hospitals are more than 50 years old - transforming these buildings into hospitals for the future can be a challenge, and not always possible.

We address efficiency in logistics, energy, and operations.

North Zealand Hospital, Hillerød

The vision for this 115,000 sqm hospital, is based on healing architecture, due to be completed in 2025.

To promote healing and well-being, healing architecture has three main goals, including:

  1. Prevent environmental stresses
  2. Bring patients and residents as close to nature as possible
  3. Empower patients and residents to feel in control

It is due to be one of the most energy efficient hospitals ever to be built.

Herlev Hospital

The 56,000 m2 extension of Herlev Hospital consists of three circular buildings placed on rectangular bases, which are displaced from each other to create a number of inviting outdoor spaces.

The design is based on the documented healing benefits of nature and daylight for patients.

At the new hospital, this knowledge is implemented through lush courtyards, green roof gardens, and a large, central green heart that acts as the lively center for the New Herlev Hospital.
