Judges

Henna Eskonsipo-Bradshaw, City of Lahti

"As a city, we are really looking forward to hearing what ideas students have for developing Lahti. The university city of Lahti wants to actively encourage students to get involved, and now is the opportunity to put even the craziest ideas on the table! The future of Lahti belongs to the students, so whatever our students would like from our city."

Petra Isotalo, The Regional Council of Päijät-Häme

"I'm looking forward to the start of the 72-hour transport challenge in Lahti – this time as a member of the judging panel. I've previously participated in the transport challenge as a competitor and organizer, so I can relate to the students' excitement as the competition approaches. The level of past competitions has been high, and I expect both realism and overflowing creativity from the competition entries."

Niina Ahlfors, The Regional Council of Päijät-Häme

"It's fantastic that the 72-hour transport challenge is starting, and we get to be part of that! I look forward to open-minded transport and land use solutions from interdisciplinary student teams, and as a regional authority, we are particularly interested in the regional aspects of the plans."

Kaisa Reunanen-Krause ja Jukka Peura, Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency

Both Kaisa and Jukka are transport systems experts. "My job includes, among other things, regional transport system work, preparation of investment programs, and various traffic surveys," says Kaisa. "I handle matters related to road network development as well as walking and cycling. Additionally, I am the contact person for transport system issues in the Päijät-Häme region," says Jukka.

Both Kaisa and Jukka encourage students to boldly take on the transport challenge. "The competition is a great opportunity to get acquainted with transport and urban planning, as well as to develop one's skills in teamwork and problem-solving," says Kaisa.

Finally, Kaisa and Jukka offer a few tips for the participants. "We recommend to bring along lots of ideas, a relaxed attitude, and an open mind. It's also important to remember that transport is not an end in itself; we travel for a reason. If a journey must be made, it should be easy, safe, and predictable," say Kaisa and Jukka.

Teemu Salminen, Uponor

Uponor's roots are on the shores of Lake Vesijärvi, and we want to be involved in developing environmental matters locally. Lahti's location, not only on the shores of Lake Vesijärvi but also above unique groundwater resources, places a significant responsibility on environmental protection, which we want to contribute our expertise to.

In the development of urban environments, phenomena brought about by climate change, such as an increase in stormwater runoff, need to be taken into account, including qualitative treatment. I believe we can challenge participants to consider broader perspectives on stormwater management and alternative solutions to address this issue.

Ville Uusitalo, LUT University

Ville Uusitalo in an associate professor at the LUT University’s sustainability change group. His research and teaching focus on assessing environmental impacts and finding ways to mitigate them. He has been working over 10 years with transport sector related issues.

“I am excited about the 72h Transport Challenge in Lahti. It will be great to see what kinds of innovative new ideas students can create within an intensive project period.”

Thomas Michelsson, Telia

Thomas Michelsson’s experience is related to starting and scaling new businesses.
Presently working as a Global Sales&BD manager for Data Insights at Telia's Division X, previously acting as commercial product manager for Telia Talous - fintech service.
